Shane

I wait, not speaking, allowing her to make up her own mind. I want her to tell me. I want to know every part of Una, but I won’t rush her. She’s staring down at her coffee cup, and I take in the beauty of her face. Her lashes lift, and I’m looking into her eyes. My stomach squeezes.

“My looks come from my dad,” she says with a sadness tugging at her voice and eyes. She pulls a curl and lets it bounce back. I’m picturing a male version of Una, and I try to imagine her with him.

“He got it, you know. He got how it felt to look different.” Now she angles her hand at her eyes.

“He must have been very handsome,” I say, and she smiles sweetly. Her head dips, and she rests her face on her hand. She smiles. “I think he was,” she tells me. The sadness is still there, but she’s smiling.

She glances away and licks her lips, and her brows pull down. She’s so close to crying. “I miss him,” she tells the floral wallpaper. I want to reach for her, comfort her, but I wait until she looks at me again.

“What happened?” I asked. I knew her dad had died when she was young, but I never knew how.

“It was a freak accident. A tree had fallen, blocking the road. My dad being my dad, tried to clear it.” One free tear falls, but she doesn’t stop talking as I follow a tear as it drops off her chin and onto the table. “Another fell and killed him.”

“I’m sorry,” I whisper the words, knowing right now to her they are meaningless, but she takes my hand in hers. “It’s a long time ago, and I know you lost too. With your mum.” I’m nodding, but all the blood has rushed to my hand where she touches me, and I allow myself to touch her back. I rotate my hand until our fingers line up, and I entwine them. Una sits back, slightly startled, but she doesn’t pull away.

“Yeah, that should have never happened,” I tell our entwined fingers. My mother was far too young to die.

“Did they ever find out?” I glance up at Una now, my focus on her lush lips. She licks them, and my attention is taken with her pink tongue.

When it disappears back into her mouth, I speak. “No. But we will.” I stare at her. “I will,” I add. My mother had been murdered in a drive-by shooting. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But even so, I still wanted to find whoever did it and kill them myself.

Una’s focus is on our twined fingers, and when I glance down, I find myself smiling. “My mother bought me that ring. She said when she saw it, it was very Shane.” My smile widens as I gaze up to see Una smiling at me. “I’ve never taken it off. I never would.” Una’s head lowers, and my body stills as her lips graze the band on my thumb.
